What This Indicator Measures

Daily CIF Mediterranean assessment of 3.5% sulphur fuel oil cargoes in USD/mt.

High Sulphur Fuel Oil (380 / 180 CST, 3.5%): A physical price for residual fuel oil with up to 3.5% sulphur. Asian and Gulf series are named by viscosity grade (380 or 180 cSt at 50 °C); European series are named by sulphur content (3.5%), with barge, cargo and delivered-bunker variants kept separate.

Specification · stated by the source for this series

  • Maximum 3.5% sulphur, from the series name.
  • 380 and 180 are maximum kinematic viscosity in cSt at 50 °C per ISO 8217 residual grades.
  • 3.5% is the maximum sulphur content by mass.

Basis: CIF Med

  • CIF (cost, insurance and freight): the price includes ocean freight and insurance to the named destination area; the difference to an FOB value therefore contains freight and insurance, not a trading margin.
  • The Mediterranean basis covers cargo loadings (FOB Med, typically Italian ports) or deliveries (CIF Med) within the Mediterranean basin.

Unit: USD/mt

  • USD/bbl values (Singapore, Arab Gulf, Fujairah) and USD/mt values (Europe, Japan naphtha) cannot be compared without a product-specific density conversion; the site does not convert them.
  • Published assessments are a low–high range with a midpoint; charts and monthly statistics use the midpoint only.

What This CIF Med Price Represents

This page tracks the daily fuel oil 3.5% on a CIF Med basis, quoted in USD/mt. Figures are CommodityScope Indicators synthesized from loaded market editions. They are not a live quote and not a republication of a price-reporting agency table.

How to use this series

  • Follow HSFO values used by scrubber-fitted vessels and power/refinery feedstock buyers; the East–West spread compares Singapore with Rotterdam.

What it is not suitable for

  • Compliant bunker pricing for non-scrubber ships (that is the 0.5% series).

Compare With

Each comparison states why the series are related and whether the latest values can be subtracted directly (same unit, currency and assessment date). Where they cannot, the values are shown side by side without a difference.
