What These Indices Measure

CommodityScope Tanker Freight Indices measure changes in defined segments of the tanker freight market using baskets of CommodityScope route assessments.

Vessel-class indices are built from separately maintained CommodityScope freight assessments with defined trade lanes, vessel classes and cargo bases. The headline Clean and Dirty indices aggregate the daily returns of their respective vessel-class indices.

At route-basket level, the indices aggregate changes in constituent freight assessments rather than averaging their absolute USD/mt values. This allows routes with different voyage distances, cargo sizes and absolute freight levels to contribute to a common market indicator.

Each index is chain-linked from a published base value and base date.
