Daily Market Brief — 23 Oct 2026
Brent jumped. Middle East freight split widened again. European distillates strengthened. And jet inventories tightened on both sides of the market.
The physical market remains defined by one thing:
Oil moved sharply higher.
• ICE Brent Dec: $116.72/b ↑$3.55 • Dated Brent: $126.69/b ↑$4.26 • WTI Dec: $103.27/b ↑$3.80 • Cash Dubai premium: +$7.99/b
The outright market strengthened, but Middle East physical structure remains heavily shaped by freight and security risk.
VLCC FREIGHT — THE SPLIT GETS WIDER
PG → China VLCC:
WS1130
Inside Persian Gulf: WS1100–1300
Gulf of Oman: WS530–600
Recent Fujairah → East fixtures were heard around:
WS550–575
That is the key dislocation.
A cargo lifted outside Hormuz can now move at roughly half the Worldscale level of an inside-Gulf cargo.
HORMUZ / WAR RISK
Transit activity recovered somewhat:
• Hormuz crossings: 23 • Bab al-Mandab: 27
But the risk premium remains elevated.
War-risk insurance for Hormuz passage is now:
10–12.5% of hull value
Recent confirmed tanker attacks continue to keep owners cautious.
Middle East oil exports have recovered above 19 mb/d, but still remain around 74% of pre-war levels.
The Atlantic remains mixed.
• WAF → Far East VLCC: WS562.5 ↓52.5 • WAF → UKC Suezmax: WS782.5 ↑47.5 • USGC → China VLCC: $57.5m ↓$1m • Brazil → China VLCC: WS530
VLCC economics continue correcting, while some Suezmax routes are re-tightening.
Physical crude remains weak in several Atlantic basins.
• CPC Blend: ~−$8/b vs Dated • Djeno: ~−$30/b • Doba: −$20 to −$23/b
North Sea sour crude also remains under pressure as Saudi inflows into Europe rise.
The message is clear:
flat price is up — but many physical differentials are still weak.
European products strengthened sharply.
• NWE ULSD CIF: $1,524.75/mt ↑$45.75 • NWE Jet CIF: $1,650.75/mt ↑$33.50 • ICE LSGO: $1,492.25/mt ↑$45 • Med naphtha FOB: $880.50/mt ↑$41.75
Stocks remain tight:
• ARA jet: 461kt ↓6.1% w/w • Diesel + gasoil: 1.774m mt • Still 18% below year-ago
Jet stocks are less than half the level seen one year ago.
Singapore middle distillate stocks dropped sharply:
8.31m bbl ↓20% w/w
Gasoil structure tightened:
• Nov/Dec Singapore gasoil spread: $3.40/b
Jet remains softer:
• South Korean jet cargoes trading at discounts to MOPS • Spot export competition increasing
Asia is showing a clear divergence:
gasoil tightness vs weaker jet pricing.
Americas MR freight surged.
• USGC → Transatlantic: WS455 ↑60 • USGC → Brazil: WS510 ↑60 • Cross-UKC: WS500 ↑90 • Baltic → UKC: WS510 ↑90
East-of-Suez LR freight remains high:
• PG → Japan LR1: WS1070 • PG → Japan LR2: WS1100
But with ample LR tonnage building outside the Gulf, pressure may emerge if demand remains weak.
Bunker prices strengthened again.
• Bunkerworld 0.5%S: $917/mt ↑$12 • BW380: $787/mt ↑$17
High freight and constrained regional flows continue to support bunker economics.
Urea is mixed.
• Middle East granular FOB: $435–445/t ↓$10 • Egypt FOB: $515–535/t • Brazil CFR: $460–490/t • NOLA: $434.5–438.5/st
Europe remains expensive to produce:
• TTF front-month: €93/MWh • EU gas storage: ~74% full • vs 91% three-year average
Gas remains a major support for European nitrogen economics.
